Connecting Uganda's Agricultural Value Chain

A digital marketplace, financial services hub, and value-chain directory empowering smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness actors across Uganda.

Executive Summary

OMA AgriLink is an integrated digital platform built to transform Uganda's agricultural value chain. It connects smallholder farmers, cooperatives, aggregators, processors, input suppliers, financial institutions, and exporters through a single ecosystem — enabling trade, access to finance, market intelligence, and end-to-end product traceability.

With over 70% of Uganda's population engaged in agriculture yet contributing less than 25% of GDP, the sector is held back by fragmented markets, limited access to credit, information asymmetry, and weak value-chain linkages. OMA AgriLink directly addresses these bottlenecks through technology designed for low-connectivity environments and tailored to the realities of Ugandan smallholders.

The Problem

Uganda's agricultural sector faces systemic challenges that keep millions of farmers in poverty:

Fragmented Markets

Farmers sell at farm-gate prices 40–60% below urban retail, with no direct access to buyers or price information.

Financial Exclusion

Less than 15% of smallholder farmers have access to formal credit, insurance, or savings products tailored to agricultural cycles.

Information Asymmetry

Real-time market prices, weather forecasts, and agronomic advice rarely reach the farmers who need them most.

Weak Traceability

Lack of lot tracking and quality assurance limits access to premium export markets and fair-trade certification.

Disconnected Value Chain

Farmers, aggregators, processors, and exporters operate in silos, creating inefficiencies and post-harvest losses of up to 30%.

Low Cooperative Capacity

Many cooperatives lack digital tools to manage members, aggregate produce, or negotiate better terms with buyers.

Our Solution

OMA AgriLink is a single platform with six integrated modules designed for Uganda's agricultural realities:

✓

Digital Marketplace

Buy and sell agricultural products across the value chain — from farm-gate to export — with search, filtering, sponsored listings, and direct buyer-seller messaging.

✓

Financial Services Hub

Access to loans, insurance, grants, and savings products through partnerships with financial institutions, supported by a Credit Passport system that builds farmer credit histories.

✓

Market Intelligence

Real-time commodity prices, market reports, weather forecasts, and news — published by district and crop, optimized for search engines to attract buyers.

✓

Value Chain Directory

A verified directory of farmers, aggregators, processors, input suppliers, transporters, and exporters — enabling connection and trust.

✓

End-to-End Traceability

Lot tracking from production through delivery, with QR-code-ready lot IDs, supply-chain mapping, and quality event logs for export compliance.

✓

Field Agent Network

Offline-first mobile tools for field agents to register farmers, cooperatives, and actors; manage data; and facilitate e-voucher input redemption.

Market Opportunity

Uganda's agricultural sector represents one of the largest underpenetrated digital markets in East Africa:

The East African Community (EAC) common market and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) create a regional export opportunity exceeding $50 billion in agri-trade annually. OMA AgriLink's traceability and market intelligence modules position Ugandan producers to capture a growing share of this market.
